REFEST is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project (Grant Agreement No. 101157663) supporting the development of retrofit technologies that can help reduce fuel consumption and emissions on existing fishing vessels. The project explores practical, scalable solutions that can be integrated without major structural changes, with the aim of enabling small-scale fishing communities to adopt more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible operations. Driving Sustainable InnovationTuco Marine Group is proud to contribute to REFEST as one of the industrial partners. The project focuses on developing cost-effective retrofit concepts that may enable existing vessels to reduce emissions by up to 40%, depending on vessel type, operational profile and technology configuration. By improving current fleets rather than replacing them, REFEST supports a more resource-efficient and economically viable pathway for the fishing sector. European CollaborationREFEST brings together 14 partners from 10 European countries, including research institutions, technology developers, fishing organisations and maritime industry experts. This broad collaboration ensures that new ideas are grounded in both scientific research and practical operational experience. As part of the consortium, Tuco Marine Group contributes expertise in innovative vessel design, lightweight structures and sustainable marine solutions. Our role supports the development and assessment of retrofit technologies that can be applied across diverse European fishing fleets. Looking AheadThe project partners are currently developing and testing several technologies, including battery integration concepts, smart sensor systems and other energy-efficient solutions. These activities are carried out in close collaboration with fishing fleets across Europe to ensure that the solutions are practical, scalable and aligned with real operational needs. REFEST aims to deliver knowledge, tools and demonstrators that can support a greener future for the maritime sector – while respecting all obligations under Horizon Europe, including proper implementation, conflict-of-interest management, data protection and communication requirements. Project FundingREFEST is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme. Tuco Marine Group’s participation follows all obligations under the Grant Agreement, including communication, dissemination and visibility requirements.

The European project REFEST – Retrofitting of Fishing Fleets with Low Payback Time and Easy to Deploy Solutions for Footprint and GHG Emissions Reduction – launched on May 1, 2024, address the growing need to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in traditional fishing vessels. Funded under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”, REFEST aims to develop scalable, low-cost technologies capable of reducing emissions by up to 40%. The project focuses mainly on retrofit requirements for fishing vessels, environmental and biodiversity impact assessment, battery design and sensor integration, and economic and social assessments. The solutions developed will be practical, easily deployable, and economically sustainable, having a significant impact on small fishing fleets. The Consortium The REFEST consortium is composed of 14 experienced academic and industrial partners from 10 countries covering the Mediterranean, North, and Baltic Seas: Italy, Spain, Turkey, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, and Poland. The partners include: 4 Research and Technology Organizations: KU (Klaipeda University) – Project Coordinator, RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), MIR (Morski Instytut Rybacki), AIMPLAS (Asociacion de investigacion de materiales plastico y conexas). 2 Large companies: ELKON (ELKON ELEKTRIK SANAYI VE TICARET ANONIM sirketi), RINA Consulting. 7 Small Medium Enterprises: TUCO (TUCO YACHT VAERFT APS), ENCO Srl, NXH (NEXTHORIZON), BLUENAV, CALSENS (Cálculo de Estructuras Sensadas), EAS Batteries GmbH, GEMI Boats Scandinavia AS. 1 Fishing Association: LFPA (Lithuanian Fisheries Producers Association). This international consortium brings together multidisciplinary expertise from the maritime, scientific, technological, and industrial sectors to develop concrete and innovative solutions. 2024 Milestones Kickoff Meeting (May 22-23, 2024) Hosted by the project coordinator, Klaipeda University in Klaipeda, Lithuania Brought together key academic and industrial stakeholders Presented project overview and six-month activity plan Consortium Meeting (November 19-20, 2024) Hosted by project partners CALSENS and AIMPLAS in Valencia, Spain Reviewed first six months of project progress Discussed technical works, challenges, and next steps Looking Ahead Currently, the partners are working on technical activities to develop the final solutions that will enable the achievement of the project’s goals. These efforts include: Designing and testing innovative technologies to improve the energy efficiency of fishing vessels. Collaborating with local fleets to ensure that the solutions are practical and adaptable to the real needs of the sector. Networking and Synergies with Other Projects In addition to its core technical activities, the REFEST project has also started establishing important networking activities and synergies with other EU-funded initiatives in the maritime and environmental sectors. These collaborations are expected to enhance the impact of the REFEST solutions and foster further innovation through the exchange of knowledge, technologies, and best practices. Towards a Sustainable Future REFEST represents a concrete example of the European Union’s commitment to integrating technological innovation with environmental sustainability. The project aims not only to improve the efficiency of vessels but also to protect marine ecosystems for future generations.

This week another USV left our facilities in Faaborg, Denmark. Unmanned Surface Vessel constitues a good part of our production however many of such is build under NDA´s with our clients. Here´s one we can show, the new ENDURUNS USV, developed and build in the ENDURUNS project and now shipped to ENDURUNS partner ALTUS LSA for their further work, preparing the vessel for the exciting missions of the ENDURUNS project where it, with its integrated hybrid AUV system from Graal Tech Srl will be capable of operating under deep ocean conditions and performing a wide range of missions, targeting the increase of scientific knowledge as well as industrial capability and performance. The powerbank of the USV will comprise a set of LFP batteries recharged by solar panels and a hydrogen PEM fuel cell. The ProZero 8m USV is equipped with a range of advanced features that ensure seamless integration with the ENDURUNS AUV system. It serves as a vital companion, facilitating geotagging, communication, and command transmission between the AUV and the Remote Mission Control Center (RMCC). This dynamic collaboration allows for real-time updates and mission adjustments, ensuring optimal performance and flexibility in any environment. One of the standout features of the ProZero 8m USV is its ability to connect with the AUV when needed and return to port as a single unit. This streamlined operation not only enhances efficiency but also facilitates accurate geotagging of the areas mapped or inspected by the AUV, providing invaluable data for various applications. To extend operational autonomy, the ProZero 8m ENDURUNS USV integrates a hybrid power bank comprising a hydrogen fuel cell, battery pack, and photovoltaic panels. This intelligent energy management system ensures sustained power supply even in remote deep ocean or heavy traffic environments, making the USV self-sufficient and adaptable to diverse operational requirements. Other partners in the project are; Comex SAS ESI Ltd. Engitec Systems International Ltd. Space Applications Services NV/SA On AIR srl Metis Baltic Klaipėdos uostas / Port of Klaipeda @Hysytech s.r.l, Z group, Swiss Approval, University of Birmingham, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha Demokritos, Cnr-Ismar Istituto di Scienze Marine, 경북대학교(Kyungpook National University), Hanwha SystemsThis project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 824348.
